3 foreign companies vie for Baghdad metro project
Haider Makiya, Chairman of the National Investment Commission (NIC), unveiled that four foreign enterprises have submitted bids to undertake the Baghdad Metro and Najaf-Karbala train initiatives.
Speaking to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Makiya disclosed that three foreign entities have expressed interest in the Baghdad metro endeavor, while one firm has presented a proposal for the Najaf-Karbala train project.
Makiya further detailed that the call for proposals for the Baghdad metro venture, announced as an investment prospect in February, has been prolonged until April 11, 2024.
Nasser Al-Asadi, advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister on transport matters, confirmed last month the finalization of designs for the Baghdad Metro project.
Al-Asadi outlined that spanning 148 kilometers with 64 stations, the Baghdad Metro initiative is slated to cover 85 percent of the capital, encompassing vital locales such as holy sites, medical facilities, educational institutions, and tourism hubs.
Back in February, Makiya underscored that international firms keen on partaking in the $2.5 billion Baghdad Metro initiative can submit their bids through the NIC’s official website.
During a February session with Al-Sudani, delegates from China Railway showcased the company’s capabilities to engage in executing the Baghdad Metro project.
Notably, the Chinese firm is presently overseeing the Nisour Square development endeavor in central Baghdad, aligned with the government’s efforts to alleviate traffic congestion in the Iraqi capital.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) elucidated that representatives of China Railway expounded on the company’s expertise and readiness to undertake this pivotal project.
