Iraq’s security services confirmed on Saturday that no drones or warplanes were detected in the air at the time of the explosions that struck a military base hosting a coalition of pro-Iranian armed groups. The explosions took place at the Calso military base in Babylon province, south of Baghdad, causing significant concern among local and international observers.

The Calso base is home to the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), also known as Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition of pro-Iranian armed groups that work alongside Iraq’s military and police forces. The blasts that occurred during the night raised questions about the security and stability of the base and led to a flurry of speculation about potential airstrikes.

In response to the speculation, an Iraqi security forces media unit issued a statement clarifying that the air defence command had reported no drone or combat aircraft activity in the area before or during the explosions. This official confirmation aims to dispel rumors and conjectures about the incident’s cause.

Local authorities are now focusing their investigation on alternative causes of the explosions. They have not yet determined whether the blasts resulted from an internal malfunction, sabotage, or another form of attack. Additional security measures have been implemented at the base to ensure the safety of personnel and to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

The Popular Mobilisation Forces have a significant presence in Iraq and have been instrumental in combatting extremist groups. The explosions at Calso base underscore the ongoing security challenges that Iraq faces as it seeks to maintain stability and counter potential threats from various sources.

Despite the absence of aerial activity, the Iraqi government and military are committed to thoroughly investigating the incident. Officials have called for calm and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information, promising to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
