Saudi Arabia took part in the “camel parade” on Saturday in Paris, joining a global celebration marking the United Nations’ declaration of 2024 as the “International Year of Camelids.” The event, organized by the French Federation for the Development of Camelids in France and Europe, saw the participation of over 30 countries, each contributing to the celebration of camels and their significance across various cultures.

The parade, held under the auspices of the International Camel Organization and sponsored by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture and the Camel Club of the Kingdom, attracted a diverse array of attendees, including international organizations, government representatives, camel breeders, and enthusiasts. Saudi Arabia’s participation highlighted its “Year of the Camel 2024” initiative, designed to promote the cultural and historical importance of camels within the Kingdom and beyond.

This event marked the third camel parade in Paris, a tradition revived after nearly a century. The parade route passed by the historic Château de Vincennes, a 12th-century royal palace and popular tourist attraction. More than 50 camels were part of the parade, alongside traditional performances and displays from participating countries such as the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Canada, India, and Morocco. The parade provided an opportunity for these nations to share their unique camel-related traditions and customs.

Leading up to the parade, the Château de Janvry Historical Center hosted dialogue sessions focusing on the global heritage of camels. These sessions encouraged the exchange of knowledge and highlighted each country’s contributions to the International Year of Camelids 2024. Presentations included discussions on the economic, cultural, and social roles of camels, with invited guests from international organizations, academia, research centers, the private sector, and the media attending.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the event aligns with its role in spearheading the International Year of Camelids 2024 through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The Kingdom’s commitment to the camel sector reflects its vision for food security and economic growth. Through this initiative, Saudi Arabia aims to bring attention to the economic and cultural value of camels and their continued relevance in contemporary society.

The Ministry of Culture’s participation in the Paris event demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s broader objectives under its Vision 2030 framework, which seeks to promote cultural exchange and showcase the Kingdom’s rich heritage on the international stage. By participating in the camel parade, Saudi Arabia reinforces its dedication to preserving camel traditions and promoting their importance in fostering cultural and economic ties worldwide.
