A high-ranking Syrian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani, has arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night, signaling a significant shift in diplomatic relations.

The visit marks Al-Shibani’s first international trip since the removal of former President Bashar Assad on December 8.

The delegation, which includes Defense Minister Marahf Abu Qasra and Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab, was welcomed at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport by Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

This visit comes at the invitation of Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations.

Al-Shibani confirmed the invitation on X earlier in the week, expressing optimism about the potential collaboration.

Syria’s new leader, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, recently highlighted Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in Syria’s rebuilding and stability during an interview with Al Arabiya. “Saudi Arabia has a major role in Syria’s future, and I take pride in everything it has done for us,” he stated.

Al-Sharaa also shared a personal connection, recalling his early childhood spent in Riyadh and expressing a desire to revisit the city.

He further praised Riyadh’s recent efforts as “very positive,” acknowledging the Kingdom’s contributions toward stabilizing the region.

This visit is expected to pave the way for enhanced bilateral relations and collaborative initiatives between Syria and Saudi Arabia.
