The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has urged for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, stressing the need to avoid military escalation and prevent the conflict from spreading to other parts of the region.

GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi reaffirmed the council’s unwavering support for the Lebanese people, sovereignty, security, and stability despite the raging attacks that have taken a huge toll on the country.

In a statement released on Sunday, Albudaiwi stressed that a ceasefire is crucial to preventing further bloodshed and maintaining regional peace. He also underscored the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for Israel to respect Lebanon’s borders and for the Lebanese government to exercise control over its territories.

The resolution, Albudaiwi noted, is essential for Lebanon to assert its sovereignty, ensuring that no unauthorized weapons or authorities operate within its borders. This would help maintain stability and security in the region, allowing the Lebanese government to function effectively.

The council’s call for a ceasefire and de-escalation aims to prevent further deterioration and promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

“This is essential for Lebanon to fully exercise its sovereignty, ensuring that no weapons exist without the approval of the Lebanese government and that no authority exists other than its own. The statement also stressed the importance of expediting the presidential elections and implementing necessary economic reforms for the Lebanese government to fulfill its responsibilities towards its citizens,” His Excellency stated.
