Israel has announced plans to maintain “security control” in the Gaza Strip even after a potential ceasefire, a statement made by Defence Minister Israel Katz on Tuesday. Following the dismantling of Hamas’s military and administrative capabilities, Israel’s army would retain “full freedom of action” in the region, akin to the ongoing security situation in the West Bank, Katz revealed on the social media platform X.

“We will not tolerate any organisation of terror against Israeli communities and Israeli citizens from the Gaza Strip,” Katz emphasized. “We will not allow a return to the reality of before October 7.”

The massacre on October 7, 2023, when Hamas and other militant groups launched attacks from Gaza, resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and more than 250 people abducted, sparking the ongoing Gaza war. Since then, Israeli forces have been engaged in intense fighting with Hamas. Palestinian sources report that more than 45,000 people have died in the conflict so far.

Hamas has insisted on a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and an end to the war as prerequisites for a ceasefire. However, Israel is determined to prevent any resurgence of the Islamist group in the aftermath of the conflict.
