The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, launched on Thursday a sewage project in the Al-Wahda district in southern Baghdad.
The project is one of four that are underway to treat sewage in different areas of Baghdad, with a total budget of one trillion Iraqi dinars (around $768.6 million), according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
With a capacity of 48,000 square meters per day, the project will serve more than 80,000 people in the district. The network for sewage is 85 kilometers long, while the network for rainwater drainage is 67 kilometers long.
Al-Sudani emphasized that the provision of services contributes to the stability of the country and that the lack of services has a significant negative impact on the lives of Baghdad’s citizens. He noted that infrastructure and service projects cannot be delayed or postponed as they are essential to Iraq’s economic development.
The Iraqi Prime Minister directed the contracting company to complete the project as quickly as possible, indicating that the current condition of services in many parts of the country cannot be accepted.
