Elmhurst, NY – Earlier this week, NYC Council Member Daniel Dromm (D-Elmhurst, Jackson Heights) was honored by the Pan Am Boulevard Family Residence for his years of service to his constituents living in the shelter.  Managed by Samaritan Village, the 216-unit facility is located at 79-00 Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst and has provided shelter to homeless families with children since June 2014.  Dromm received the award during his third annual backpack giveaway at the shelter.

Over the past three years, Dromm has delivered hundreds of backpacks, notebooks and pencils to students of all ages living in the Pan Am Boulevard Family Residence. The backpacks were generously donated by Queens Center Mall.  In the past, he successfully secured Halloween costumes for children at the shelter, allowing them to enjoy a night of fun and entertainment they would otherwise not have.  When protests against the shelter occurred, he worked with the administration to take the children on field trips so they did not have to see or hear the angry protestors outside their temporary home.

“All of these families are my constituents,” said Dromm.  “While I am touched by this recognition, as their Council Member, it is my duty to serve them to the best of my ability.  The free backpacks and school supplies I secured will enable these children to excel at school.  The Halloween costumes I provided brought joy and excitement to young people who have suffered much hardship.  For three years, I have worked to meet the needs of these families, and I will continue to do so throughout my tenure in the Council.”
