Stampede in Demba Diop stadium leads to the loss of eight lives
SENEGAL- As the saga of stampede in Malawi close down, another opens in Dakar, Senegal. Earlier reports stated that the tragic turnout became actualized at Demba Diop stadium, of which a match was ongoing between US Ouakam and State de Mbour. According to reports gathered, a ruckus between fans of each sides was claimed to have been the alibi behind the release of tear gas by the police.
Further reports from Reuters added that the release of the substance ignited the stampede which claimed eight lives. The sports minister, Matar Ba stated that a young girl was among the dead victims alongside sixty injured people who are currently hospitalized.
The Senegalese president, Macky Sall however proved his rage at the uneventful saga following a tweet on his social handle: “Outraged by the incidents of the Demba Diop stadium. Light will be shed on this tragedy, officials identified and punished.”
The president has also promised to leave no stone unturned in bringing the culprits to book. In a condolence message from Fatma Samoura, the highest football administrator in Senegal expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families who lost relatives to the incident. He tweeted:
“My thoughts with those who lost loved ones or were injured during the tragic stampede at Demba Diop stadium. Heartfelt condolences.”
Also, in respect and honor to the lost victims, while investigation continues, according to El Hammiodu Kase, there is report that the Senegal’s legislative elections campaign scheduled to hold on July 30 has been postponed in respect to the stampede victims.
