Recently, Gabonese skipper Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has won the top goal scorer award in the German Bundesliga. He plays for Borussia Dortmund. His 31 goals also helped Dortmund to clinch a Champions League spot come next season. This however, is a great achievement for the club.

In addition, the German title was won by league giants, Bayern Munich, whose striker, Polish international Robert Lewandowski, was also in the race for top goalscorer going into the last day of the season. Unfortunately, he couldn’t clinch the prize.

It was reported that Aubameyang scored twice in his side’s 4 – 3 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday. Fortunately for him, Lewandowski did not score on the last day in his side’s 4 – 1 victory over Freiburg. This eventually made him the highest goal scorer.

He becomes the second African to win the award after ex-Ghana international Tony Yeboah. He won it twice while playing for Eintracht Frankfurt in 1992/1993 and 1993/1994 seasons. After about 13 years, another African claims the prize.

Also, after many months, It is the second time that he has beaten Lewandowski to an award. In June 2016, the player was being voted as the player of last season by the players union, beating former Dortmund player Robert Lewandowski to second place. Aubameyang is really loved by his fans and also his fellow players.

In addiition, he was the African footballer of the year until when Algeria and Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez dethroned him early this year. Many believed that Mahrez’s contribution to his teams Premier League triumph last year seemed to have shot him to the top prize.

During the last African Cup of Nations (AFCON), both players didn’t perform to their fans’ expectations as they both lost out of the group stages of the competition. However, it was more difficult for Aubameyang whose team failed to win a game in their group. Many confirmed that they couldn’t succeed in the game all alone, the fault must have come from their fellow players who might not be good enough.

They didnt win any match as they played out three draws scoring twice. Their group comprised Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau – tournament debutants – and Cameroon. At the end, the Indomitable Lions, went on to win the tournament beating Egypt by two goals to one.

In response to Aubameyang’s success, there has been an outpouring of congratulations for him particularly on social media platform, Twitter and Facebook. In the midst of all those, rumours continue to deepen around his future with speculations linking him with a move away from Germany.

Aubameyang has made Gabon and Africa as a whole proud. This prize was won last by an African 13 years ago. Gabonese are really excited and hope that more prizes will come to Africa.
