By The New York Department of State’s Dr. Laura González-Murphy, who directs the New York State Office for New Americans, was recognized today, along with other honorees, with the Mujeres Destacadas Award. The award is bestowed annually throughout the country to prominent Latino women for their achievements and contributions in a wide range of fields.
“I’d like to congratulate Laura for this prestigious and well-deserved honor,” said Acting New York Secretary of State Rossana Rosado. “Her work on behalf of immigrants throughout the State and her selfless commitment to public service is inspirational.”
“This recognition is a tremendous honor,” said González-Murphy. “It is exciting, yet also humbling, to join such a prominent group of women who have had such a profound effect on society for the better.”
Mujeres Destacadas is a month-long editorial series and awards ceremony in which Latinas are recognized and honored for their outstanding contributions in the fields of Community Leadership, Education, Health, Arts & Culture, and Business. The “Mujeres Destacadas” ceremony, now in its 21st year, has recognized over 1,200 women in the tri-state area.
El Diario La Prensa, the premier publication to reach New York-area Latinos, hosted the Annual Mujeres Destacadas Awards Luncheon honoring these outstanding women and leaders. Previous recipients of the award have come from business, industry, government, non-profit and entertainment worlds, but the common thread is that they have all reached a level of distinction and, through their hard work and determination, have made a difference in the community.
Before being appointed as the Director of the New York State Office for New Americans, the first state-level immigrant office created by statute in the country, she was an Empire State Fellow at the Department, where she assisted in the program administration of ONA, helped promote the Governor’s Anti-Human Trafficking campaign, and served as the Department’s Language Access Coordinator. She has served as a consultant on immigration policy issues for numerous organizations, including the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars and the Mexican Congress. She was also a Research Assistant Professor at Rockefeller College, SUNY Albany, where she has taught courses on foreign policy, immigration, human rights, and Latin American politics. There, Laura also served as Assistant Director of “The International Context of Immigration: US, Mexico, and Beyond” project, which examines the politics of changing immigration policies.

del Estado de Nueva York, fue honrada hoy con el premio de Mujeres Destacadas. Este premio es entregado anualmente a Latinas prominentes por sus contribuciones y logros en diversos campos en todo el país.
“Me gustaría felicitar a Laura por este prestigioso y muy merecido honor,” dijo Rossana Rosado, Secretaria de Estado Interina del estado de Nueva York. “Sus esfuerzos en nombre de los inmigrantes de todo el estado y su entrega abnegada al servicio público es inspirador.”
“Este premio es un tremendo honor,” dijo González-Murphy. “Es excitante, y a la vez humilde, el ser parte de tan prominente grupo de mujeres que han tenido un profundo efecto en la sociedad para su mejoría.”
Mujeres Destacadas es una serie editorial y ceremonia de premios en donde las Latinas son reconocidas y honradas por sus brillantes contribuciones en los campos del liderazgo comunitario, la educación, la salud, el arte y la cultura, y negocios. La ceremonia de Mujeres Destacadas está en su 21 aniversario y ha reconocido más de 1,200 en el área tri-estatal.
Previos recipientes del premio han surgido del área de negocios, de la industria, gobierno, sin-fines de lucro, y el mundo de entretenimiento. El común denominador es que todas han alcanzado nivel de distinción y mediante su fuerte trabajo y determinación han hecho una gran diferencia en la comunidad.
Antes de ser asignada como directora de la Oficina Para Neuvos Americanos del Estado de Nueva York, la primera oficina de inmigrantes al nivel estatal creado mediante la ley en el país, ella fue una becaria del Departamento de Estado de Nueva York donde ella asistió en el programa de administración de ONA. Ayudo promover la campaña contra el tráfico humano y sirvió como coordinadora de acceso de lenguaje del departamento. Ella ha servido como asesora en política migratoria para numerosas organizaciones incluyendo el Centro Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars and the Mexican Congress. Ella también fue asistente profesora de investigación en Rockefeller College y SUNY Albany donde ha enseñado cursos en inmigración, derechos humanos, políticas internacionales, y políticas Latinoamericanas.
