By Council Member Daniel Dromm Supports PowerMyLearning’s Family Learning Workshop at PS89Q
New York, NY (March 19, 2016, 1 PM) – This Saturday, 135 students from PS89Q and their families took home a free computer loaded with educational software as part of Family Learning Workshop hosted by PowerMyLearning.
“These free computers and software will greatly benefit PS 89Q families whose economic realities prevent them from owning such equipment,” said NYC Council Education Committee Chairperson Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights, Elmhurst), who supported this program through the Council’s Digital Inclusion and Literacy Initiative. “This is a life-changing experience for children who will now be able to complete their homework and school projects in the comfort of their own homes. In this day and age, all students need access to the latest technology in order to succeed academically. I am proud to have provided funding for this major gift which brings us closer to achieving this goal.”
The program was offered by PowerMyLearning, a non-profit with a mission to help students, parents, and teachers in low-income communities harness the power of digital learning to improve educational outcomes. Since its founding in 1999, PowerMyLearning is proud to have helped more than 100,000 students, families, and teachers in over 100 New York City schools.
At the bilingual workshop, families attended with their student and learn together about using technology as a powerful educational tool. They received information about affordable broadband options, free subscriptions to premium software content, and 24×7 bilingual Help Desk support and repair services. The school’s partnership with PowerMyLearning also included a professional development workshop for teachers, designed to help them increase family engagement in the learning process.
