The minister for water and environment, Ephraim Kamuntu has warned Ugandans living in disaster threatened areas of very heavy rains in the soon starting season between September to December which are to cause El nino which most of the time leads to destruction of property and sometimes lives.

Addressing a news conference today in Kampala, the minister asked all Ugandans living in mountainous, low laying areas to vacate to safer areas as government will also extend a helping hand to them from where they relocate.

He further advised farmers to grow long term maturing crops at the start of the season and later follow them with short term maturing crops adding that this will help them harvest a good amount of yields at the end of the season.

He said,”We are to to soon experience an El nino. There will be very heavy rainfall with heavy winds. There will be floods which are likely to destroy property.”

He advised people to report to relevant authorities if they experience any disaster.
