#MCRAIDS: Muslim Community Report
to Host Twitter Chat on World AIDS Day
On World AIDS Day, Monday, December 1, Muslim Community Report will host a Twitter Chat on the relationship between HIV/AIDS and the Muslim and African communities of New York City. Facilitated by a panel of experts, the discussion will foster awareness within our communities, and bring increased attention among city agencies and organizations to their needs and resources.
Participants in the panel are slated to include Imam Talib of the Islamic Leadership Council of New York ; Jason Walker of VOCAL-NY, a membership organization that builds power among low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS (@VOCALNewYork); a representative of BOOM!Health, a non-profit organization that “delivers a full range of prevention, syringe access, health coordination, behavioral health,” and other services in the Bronx (@boomhealthnyc); and a representative of the New York City Department of Health (@nychealthy). There will also be questions from students of the Islamic Leadership School, and from other members of the Muslim, African, and other communities. Key discussion topics will include the degree to which Muslim and African communities in New York City are affected by HIV/AIDS; the contributions already being made by Muslims in the fight against AIDS; the goals and programs involved in New York City’s fight toward zero HIV infections; the steps readers can take to minimize their risk of contracting HIV; and the resources that parents and educators can obtain for further dissemination. The discussion will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Monday, December 1, under the hashtag #MCRAIDS, and will be hosted by @MuslimComReport.
