Special Adviser on Global Youth Issues and Director of the Office of Global Youth Issues (J/GYI) Zeenat Rahman will serve as the Department of State representative for the “No Lost Generation” strategy, working in conjunction with Assistant Secretary Anne C. Richard in the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. “No Lost Generation” aims to provide young people affected by the conflict in Syria with the chance to shape a more stable and secure future.
The United States has provided more than $1.3 billion in humanitarian assistance to the people of Syria since the crisis began, and will be announcing further aid at the Kuwait conference for Syria and the region on January 15 in Kuwait City. U.S. assistance is providing food, clean water, shelter, medical care, and relief supplies to more than 4.2 million people inside Syria, and 2.3 million refugees from Syria across the region. As the largest donor to the Syrian humanitarian response, the United States supports the UN-led “No Lost Generation” effort to meet the needs of those most affected by the crisis – the children of Syria.
Special Adviser Rahman and Assistant Secretary Richard will travel to Jordan next week, where they will focus on the plight of Syrian and other refugees, as well as visit U.S. government-funded programs for refugees. They will continue to Kuwait for the January 15 International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria.
“No Lost Generation” aims to channel $1 billion, raised through UN-led funding appeals, into programs that, in partnership with governments and local communities, deliver education and remedial learning opportunities; offer protection from exploitation, abuse and violence; provide psychological care and support; and enhance social cohesion in local communities to support regional stability. These programs include strengthening national and community-based child protection systems.
