The African Union(AU) has condemned attempts to destabilize institutions in Chad and warned against attempts to change the government there unconstitutionally

A statement issued toady by AU said that the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has learnt with deep concern about the attempt to destabilize the Chadian institutions, as stated in the communique of 1 May 2013 of the Chadian Government.

The statement said, ‘The Chairperson of the Commission strongly condemns this attempt, which comes at a time when Chad is making sustained efforts to promote its socio-economic development and facilitate political dialogue, through the establishment of consultative structures bringing together all stakeholders, so as to deepen the democratic process.

The Chairperson of the Commission recalls AU’s principled position on the total rejection of unconstitutional change of government and the recourse to armed violence to advance political claims.

The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the support of the AU to the ongoing efforts of the Chadian Government, both with respect to development and the promotion of political dialogue. She seizes the opportunity to reiterate AU’s deep appreciation for the outstanding contribution of Chad to the African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA), and acknowledges the huge sacrifices made within that framework.’
