Saudi National Center for Environmental Compliance initiates unification of investment permits in environmental sector
In a strategic move aimed at streamlining environmental investments, the Saudi National Center for Environmental Compliance has unveiled plans to consolidate the issuance of investment permits within the environmental sector. This initiative, announced recently, signifies a pivotal step towards enhancing regulatory coherence in the realm of environmental compliance.
The center has initiated the process of updating the initial list of activities for investors, with a meticulous classification based on their environmental impact. Anticipated to conclude within the first quarter of this year, the comprehensive update involves categorizing activities according to their effects on sensitive receptors and environmental circles.
Eng. Abdullah Al-Kaabi, Director of the Permits Department at the center, emphasized that the unification of permit issuance procedures is a key objective for 2024. This encompasses the formulation of standardized models for reviewing and evaluating environmental studies, as well as the expeditious issuance and renewal of permits through the center’s electronic platform.
Al-Kaabi further disclosed that the center is actively working on a broader strategy to augment compliance rates in obtaining necessary environmental permits for enterprises. The list of activities subject to classification encompasses approximately 3,500 entries, aligning with the national guide for unified economic activities in the Kingdom issued by the General Authority for Statistics. Continuous updates to the list are underway to ensure its relevance.
Highlighting the center’s instrumental role in bolstering environmental conditions during 2023, Al-Kaabi stated that over 6,700 operational and construction environmental permits were issued, along with 140 licenses granted to environmental consulting service offices.
The center, steadfast in its commitment to preserving and protecting the environment and its resources, remains dedicated to providing high-quality services that elevate compliance with environmental regulations and standards. As Saudi Arabia advances its environmental governance, the unification of investment permits emerges as a key catalyst for sustainable and responsible development in the region.
