Iraqi Prime Minister, Dutch counterpart forge bilateral cooperation at UN assembly

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani engaged in high-level discussions with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, outlining the prospects of Dutch contributions to Iraq’s infrastructure.

New York City played host to the meeting between the two prime ministers, occurring on the sidelines of their participation in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. An official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) conveyed the essence of their deliberations.

The talks encompassed various dimensions of collaboration between Iraq and the Netherlands, with a firm focus on enhancing economic ties for the mutual benefit of both nations. One noteworthy point was the proposal to establish a bilateral council aimed at streamlining cooperation, particularly in the realms of agriculture and water management. Notably, the Netherlands holds a prominent position in these fields.

Furthermore, the discussion extended to Iraq’s aspiration to tap into Dutch expertise in addressing the ramifications of climate change and harnessing renewable energy sources.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Al-Sudani expressed his appreciation for the Netherlands’ steadfast support in Iraq’s ongoing battle against ISIS, a testament to their commitment within the international coalition against terrorism and NATO’s mission.

Emphasizing the strategic importance of the partnership agreement inked between Iraq and the European Union, Prime Minister Al-Sudani underscored the significance of this accord, which holds promising prospects for Iraq’s future cooperation with the EU and its member states.
