Heroin worth over 1 million US dollars has been uncovered by sniffer dogs at Nigeria’s Murtala Mohammed International Airport.
According to eye witnesses, pandemonium ensued at the airport when the drugs dealers realized that they had been discovered by dogs. They fled and police pursued them.
According to one of the airport police officers, Nicholas Okugbe, the sniffer dogs that led to detecting of heroin belong to to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. He said that the dogs are specially trained to detect drugs.
Okugbe said,’ The drugs dealers thought they would be more smart than all of us at the airport and hid their stuff in balls and carpets. The sniffer dogs helped us to detect three consignments of heroin hidden in balls and woolen carpets.’
He said that the heroin weighing about 30 kgs was imported from Pakistan through the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Shed that operates at Murtala Mohammed International Airport.
He said that the carpet consignment of 14kg came as cargo on KLM flight while the other two consignments of balls weighing about 16 kgs were imported on Saudi Arabia Airline.
Okugbe said that for sometime now, they have stepped up security at the airport to net drugs dealers. He said the drug dealers are giving a negative publicity about the country internationally and there is need to get rid of them.
