Transport authority introduces standardised uniform code for bus drivers, including Abaya option for women
In a move aimed at enhancing the professionalism and public image of the transport sector, the Transport General Authority (TGA) in Saudi Arabia has unveiled a comprehensive uniform code for bus drivers involved in specialized transport activities.
These regulations, set to take effect on April 27, 2024, apply to drivers engaged in bus rental, guidance, educational transport, and international passenger transport.
The initiative seeks to standardize the appearance of bus drivers, aligning it with public preferences, and thereby improving service quality across a sector that caters to diverse citizens, tourists, and visitors. For women drivers, the approved uniform provides flexibility, allowing the option of wearing an abaya with boots or shoes, along with the choice of a head cover or a black cap. The mandatory elements include a long-sleeved blue shirt, black trousers, a black belt, and black boots.
Similarly, the uniform for male drivers presents adaptable choices, permitting the wearing of the national dress with boots or shoes, and optionally, a Shemagh/Ghutra or black cap. The prescribed attire for male drivers comprises a long-sleeved blue shirt, black trousers, a black belt, and black boots. Compliance with these uniform standards is mandatory for licensed establishments operating in the specified bus transport activities, as well as individuals authorized for educational transport.
Recognizing the diversity within the sector, the Transport Authority allows licensed establishments the flexibility to design their own uniforms, provided they obtain prior approval. These custom uniforms can include a long or short-sleeved shirt, long trousers, belt, boots, and an optional cap matching the shirt color. Notably, establishments must ensure that any additional elements, such as jackets or coats, do not hinder service delivery.
Furthermore, driver identification cards play a crucial role in maintaining transparency and accountability. These cards must prominently display the driver’s name, photograph, driver’s number, and the name/logo of the establishment. In the case of educational transport, only the driver’s name and number are required on the identification card. It is emphasized that the uniform should not obscure any essential information on the driver’s identification card, ensuring seamless identification and accountability within the transport sector.
