UN agencies respond to ceasefire between Hamas, Israel, highlight urgent humanitarian needs
The recent ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, aimed at halting a devastating conflict that has left significant destruction across Gaza, has drawn reactions from United Nations agencies.
These agencies have underscored the importance of the agreement while emphasizing the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), expressed hope that the ceasefire would bring much-needed relief to both the people of Gaza and Israeli captives.
He stated, “The agreement will bring respite for the people of Gaza and the Israeli captives and called for rapid and unhindered access to respond to the ‘tremendous suffering caused by this war.’”
The World Food Programme (WFP) announced its preparedness to provide aid to over one million people in Gaza. However, the agency emphasized the necessity of open border crossings and the safe movement of humanitarian teams throughout the territory to effectively deliver assistance.
on his part, Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, welcomed the ceasefire with great relief but stressed the need for justice. “I am hugely relieved by the news,” Turk said, while emphasizing “the need to pursue accountability and justice for the grave violations and abuses which have been committed.”
Catherine Russell, executive director of UNICEF, described the ceasefire as “long overdue for the children and families of Gaza” as well as for Israeli captives held in the territory. She noted the harrowing impact of the conflict, stating, “The war has exacted a horrific toll on Gaza’s children, having killed at least 14,500 of them.”
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) echoed calls for unimpeded humanitarian access and emphasized its readiness to deliver essential supplies, including shelter, water, and sanitation materials, to displaced Palestinians.
