Saudi Arabia: Heavy rainfall hits Makkah, Madinah, authorities issue alerts
Heavy rains inundated parts of Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah on Monday, flooding roads and squares, disrupting traffic, and impacting daily life.
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture reported that Al-Shafiyah in Badr governorate (Madinah) recorded the highest rainfall at 49.2 mm, followed by Jeddah’s Al-Basateen district with 38 mm. Other significant rainfall rates included the Prophet’s Mosque area in Madinah (36.1 mm) and Quba Mosque (28.4 mm).
Rainfall continues across several regions, including Qassim, Tabuk, Northern Borders, and Al-Jouf, with forecasts extending until Tuesday morning, January 7.
The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) lowered Jeddah’s alert from red to orange but warned of moderate rains with strong winds, high waves, and potential water accumulation.
NCM Spokesperson Hussein Al-Qahtani emphasized that the rainy conditions persist and advised caution, adherence to warnings, and monitoring of weather updates.
Jeddah’s mayoralty has deployed teams to manage water accumulation and ensure public safety. Travelers have been urged by King Abdulaziz International Airport to verify flight schedules with airlines due to weather-related disruptions.
In Jazan and surrounding areas, strong winds reaching speeds of 40–49 km/h are expected, along with reduced visibility and high waves.
Authorities have urged the public to remain in safe places during rainfall and avoid risks. The NCM reiterated its call for vigilance, emphasizing adherence to safety measures during ongoing adverse weather conditions.
