Norwegians rally in solidarity with Palestinians, demand lasting peace, two-state solution
A significant demonstration in solidarity with Palestinians has been held in Oslo, Norway’s capital, spearheaded by the Norwegian Church.
The event saw participation from the Norwegian King, members of the government, and leaders of political parties, reflecting widespread national concern for the ongoing crisis.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide explained the urgency of ending the violence in Gaza and addressing Palestinian aspirations.
“We must stop the war and killing in Gaza, but we must [also] strive to achieve the aspirations of the Palestinian people,” he stated.
Eide highlighted Norway’s proactive efforts, including recognizing the State of Palestine and supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), while encouraging other nations to take similar actions.
He further called for a comprehensive vision beyond a ceasefire: It is necessary” to think collectively beyond the ceasefire” and work towards the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The demonstration points to Norway’s commitment to advocating for peace and a two-state solution as the pathway to resolving the enduring conflict.
The war in Gaza by the Israeli forces has killed at least 44,363 Palestinians and wounded 105,070 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and more than 200 were taken captive.
