Nigeria: Dozens feared dead, others missing in boat mishap in River Niger
A boat carrying traders to a weekly market has capsized on the Niger River in central Nigeria, leaving dozens feared dead
This was confirmed by Makama Suleiman, spokesperson for the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
The boat departed from the Missa community in Kogi State, heading toward a market in neighboring Niger State when the accident occurred. Initial reports indicate that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets, a factor that significantly increased the likelihood of fatalities.
“It’s true there was a boat mishap on Thursday involving a significant number of women heading to the market in Niger State. We are still investigating to ascertain the number of people involved and the cause of the accident,” said Suleiman Makama, NIWA’s Media Head.
As of Friday, eight bodies have been recovered, and search-and-rescue efforts remain underway. The exact number of passengers and fatalities has not yet been confirmed but local reports said about 200 were on the boat before the accident.
This unfortunate occurrence raises safety concerns in Nigeria’s inland waterways, where overloading and the absence of safety equipment such as life jackets remain persistent issues. Authorities are urging communities to prioritize safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
Rescue operations continue as families and officials await more information on those unaccounted for.
