Iran breaks silence on Sinwar killing by Israeli forces
In response to the killing of Yahya Sinwar, Iran’s mission to the United Nations has assured that the murder of the Hamas chief would lead to the strengthening of “resistance” in the region.
The Hamas leader was reportedly killed in a gun battle by Israeli troops. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said Sinwar, considered the mastermind of the 7 October attack just over a year ago, had been “eliminated” in southern Gaza on Wednesday.
The Iranian mission said in response to the killing on X that“The spirit of resistance will be strengthened. He will become a model for the youth and children who will carry forward his path toward the liberation of Palestine.”
“As long as occupation and aggression exist, resistance will endure, for the martyr remains alive and a source of inspiration.”
The Israeli military confirmed the killing on Thursday in southern Gaza’s Rafah.
“Yesterday in Tel Sultan in Rafah, Yahya Sinwar was eliminated by army fighters,” said military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.
“The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7, was eliminated… by [Israeli military] soldiers,” Foreign Minister Israel Katz also said in a statement.
The military later confirmed that “after a year-long pursuit,” soldiers “eliminated Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization, in an operation in the southern Gaza Strip” on Wednesday.
Hamas has not confirmed his death.
