President Abbas meets Gambian president at UNGA, discusses Israeli aggression, OIC support
President Mahmoud Abbas met with Gambian President Adama Barrow on Thursday on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
During the meeting, President Abbas updated President Barrow on the Palestinian leadership’s ongoing efforts to end Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
The Palestine News Agency reports that he stressed the need for the complete withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza and the importance of allowing humanitarian aid into the region.
Abbas highlighted the critical role of international efforts, particularly through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in ensuring that Israel complies with international law and respects recent UN General Assembly resolutions demanding an end to the occupation. He also expressed gratitude for Gambia’s support of these resolutions.
In response, President Barrow reaffirmed Gambia’s commitment to a two-state solution in line with international law, a position he reiterated during his address to the General Assembly.
Barrow called for an immediate ceasefire to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and urged the international community to prioritize Gaza’s reconstruction once hostilities end.
The two leaders also explored ways to further strengthen the relationship and cooperation between Palestine and Gambia.
