Saudi Arabia denounces assassination attempt on Comoros President
Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the assassination attempt on Comoros President Azali Assoumani, who was slightly injured in a knife attack while attending the funeral of a prominent religious leader.
The Kingdom, through its foreign ministry, affirmed its support for the country’s stability and security.
The apex Muslim nation also extended its best wishes for President Assoumani’s swift recovery and offered prayers for the ongoing prosperity of the Comorian people.
The attack occurred in Salimani Itsandra, a town near the capital Moroni, at around 2 p.m. local time. Government spokesperson Fatima Ahamada confirmed that President Assoumani’s injuries were minor, and he has since returned home.

The assailant, identified as 24-year-old soldier Ahmed Abdou, was arrested by security forces but was found dead in his police cell the following day. National prosecutor Ali Mohamed Djounaid announced that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of Abdou’s death.
Recall that president Assoumani, who first rose to power in a 1999 military coup, was re-elected for a fourth term in May following a disputed election.
