Pope Francis delivered a powerful message to the nation’s political leaders, emphasizing the need to combat religious extremism that distorts beliefs through “deception and violence.”

As the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, Indonesia faces unique challenges regarding interfaith relations, and the pontiff’s visit comes as a significant moment for fostering dialogue in a region where Christians are a minority.

In a speech at Jakarta’s presidential palace, Pope Francis urged leaders to be vigilant against the threats posed by extremism, highlighting the importance of mutual respect and understanding among different faiths.

He stressed that the Catholic Church is committed to enhancing inter-religious dialogue as a means to counteract intolerance and prejudice.

“By fostering this dialogue, we can work together to eliminate prejudices and create a climate of trust that is essential for addressing our common challenges,” the 87-year-old pope stated.

His visit, which marks his longest overseas journey to date, is not only a spiritual pilgrimage but also a call to action for leaders and communities to unite against the forces that seek to divide them.

Pope Francis also took the opportunity to meet with local Catholics, encouraging them to practice their faith with compassion and to avoid imposing their beliefs on others.
