OPEC Secretary General visits Baghdad
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met with Haitham Al-Ghais, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), during the latter’s official visit to Iraq’s capital.
Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s dedication to OPEC’s overarching policies and strategies, particularly in relation to oil production and decisions made under the OPEC+ framework.
As one of the organization’s largest oil-exporting members, Iraq plays a significant role in maintaining global oil market stability. Al-Sudani underscored that Iraq remains committed to ensuring the success of OPEC’s efforts.
“During this visit, Iraq presented clear and determined steps to compensate for overproduced volumes and gave assurances that it would achieve full conformity going forward,” said Al-Ghais.
Earlier in the week, Al-Ghais held discussions with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul Ghani Abdul-Zahra. Their meeting focused on current oil market conditions and the importance of ongoing cooperation among Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) countries. Both leaders highlighted Iraq’s commitment to the timely implementation of production adjustments and compensation plans, which are essential to preserving market balance.
“Returning to Iraq, a Founder Member of OPEC and birthplace of our Organization, is always a great pleasure,” said Al-Ghais. “I received strong assurances that Iraq continues to be fully committed to the DoC’s ongoing market stabilization efforts.”
These meetings reflect Iraq’s vital role in OPEC and its continued collaboration to achieve global oil market stability.
