Explosions occur in PMF logistical support warehouse in Baghdad
Iraqi sources confirmed that a series of explosions took place on Thursday in one of the warehouses of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in the southern part of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
It is not clear yet whether these explosions were caused by a drone attack or an unintentional accident involving outdated ammunition stockpiles.
Fire trucks rushed to the scene of the explosion in an attempt to control the fire that broke out as a result of the explosions.
Following the incident, the PMF announced that a committee had been established to investigate the reasons behind the explosions, according to a statement cited by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The statement added that no casualties had been reported so far from the blasts that occurred at 7 p.m. Baghdad time.
Last month, a security source reported that a strong explosion took place at an arms depot belonging to the Iraqi border guard forces on the Iraqi-Syrian border, west of Mosul, adding that two of the border guard forces were injured.
In August 2022, seven people were killed in an explosion of a weapons depot in Najaf city in central Iraq, about 160 kilometers south of Baghdad.
Iraqi weapons depots spread remarkably within residential areas after 2003. With the beginning of each summer, people start to fear the possible explosion of these depots because of the high temperatures that turn them into time bombs that may take their lives.
Between the summers of 2016 and 2018, Iraq witnessed the explosion of three weapons depots in the southern and eastern parts of the capital, Baghdad.
