Iraq plans to build a marine single window for key ports

Iraq plans to digitally transform its marine industry, with ambitions to create a maritime single window for Umm Qasr South Port and Umm Qasr North Port in the southern Iraqi governorate of Basra.

A team of specialists from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) visited Basra between June 30 and July 4 and met with officials to determine what assistance the country requires to achieve its goals, according to the IMO.

All IMO Member States must begin using a Maritime Single Window (MSW), a one-stop digital platform, on January 1, 2024, for the interchange of critical information between pertinent authorities and stakeholders engaged in the arrival, port stay, and departure of ships.

According to the IMO, the step expedites processes and increases global shipping efficiency.

The MSW system would save time and money since over 80 percent of Iraq’s imports flow via the Um Qasr ports.

Once put into effect, it will be expanded to include the Al-Faw Grand Port, which is expected to open in December 2024, as well as more Iraqi ports later on.

The mission’s comprehensive report, which includes suggestions, will function as a guide for the creation of Iraq’s MSW system in compliance with IMO guidelines and principles.
