The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its approval of the recent decision made by the UN Security Council, advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, particularly during the sacred month of Ramadan. According to reports from the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry lauded the resolution, foreseeing its potential to pave the way for a lasting cessation of hostilities and the liberation of all captives.

In a statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, emphasis was placed on the significance of the resolution in bringing about a sustained halt to the ongoing violence, while also highlighting the imperative of ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. The ministry reiterated its call upon the international community to assume responsibility in ending the Israeli bombardments targeting civilians in Gaza, underscoring the critical need for the provision of essential supplies to the affected population.

The resolution, which was adopted by the UN Security Council on Monday, comes after initial setbacks, including the rejection of a draft resolution presented by the United States last Friday. Following this rejection, efforts were undertaken by eight of the ten non-permanent members of the Council to formulate a new draft resolution, originally slated for a vote on Saturday. However, the vote was rescheduled to Monday in a bid to avert further delays and setbacks.

The newly proposed resolution seeks to enforce an immediate humanitarian ceasefire throughout the duration of Ramadan, with the ultimate objective of securing a permanent cessation of hostilities in the Gaza region. The resolution’s significance is underscored by the staggering toll of the conflict, with over 32,000 Palestinians having lost their lives in the violence that has plagued the region.

As the international community grapples with the complexities of the situation, the adoption of this resolution by the UN Security Council represents a significant step towards mitigating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and fostering an environment conducive to lasting peace and stability in the region.

Efforts to implement the provisions outlined in the resolution are now anticipated, as stakeholders work towards the realization of its objectives, including the immediate cessation of hostilities and the facilitation of vital humanitarian assistance to those in need.
