Leaders of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), Yasir Arman and Khalid Omer Youssif, have publicly denounced the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for their reported abuses against civilians. In a recent statement, Jaafar Hassan, the coalition’s official spokesman, underscored their steadfast opposition to violations by any party involved in the conflict.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune on Sunday, Hassan asserted, “The ultimate responsibility for any violations within a controlled area rests with the party in control, regardless of whether the party directly commits them or if they are perpetrated by entities under their authority.” He emphasized the obligation of the controlling party to take preventive measures to forestall such violations.

Highlighting the paramount importance of safeguarding civilians, Hassan stressed, “The greatest danger of war is the targeting of civilians. They have the right to live in their homes and communities. Regardless of who controls the region, be it the armed forces or the RSF, it’s their duty to protect them.”

The statements issued by the FFC underscore mounting concerns about civilian safety in Sudan amid the ongoing conflict between the military and the RSF. They underscore the urgent need for both sides to uphold human rights standards and seek peaceful resolution to the conflict.

While the Sudanese military faces its own accusations of human rights abuses, it has accused the FFC, a part of the anti-war coalition, of failing to publicly condemn the alleged violations and war crimes committed by the RSF. This exchange of allegations underscores the complexity of the situation and the challenges involved in achieving accountability and justice amidst the ongoing conflict.
