The Jordanian Chamber of Commerce has disclosed on Monday that Iraq assumed the mantle of the largest importer of goods from Jordan during the month of January. According to a statement issued by the chamber, the imported goods into Iraq amounted to 61 million Jordanian dinars, equating to approximately $86 million in value.

Comparatively, Jordan’s exports for the same month totaled 108 million Jordanian dinars, equivalent to $152.3 million. This marks a notable increase from the corresponding period in 2023, where exports amounted to 99 million Jordanian dinars, or $139.6 million.

Following closely behind Iraq, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerged as the second-largest importer of Jordanian goods in January, with imports valued at $10 million Jordanian dinars ($14.1 million). Egypt followed suit, importing goods worth $8 million Jordanian dinars ($11.28 million) from Jordan.

The recent surge in imports from Iraq underscores the significant role neighboring countries play in Iraq’s trade landscape, particularly Turkey and Iran. Historically, Jordan served as a crucial market for Iraqi imports during the economic blockade of the 1990s.

Among the plethora of goods exported from Jordan to Iraq are fruits, vegetables, dairy products, palm oil, poultry, pharmaceuticals, and various manufactured goods spanning from paints to electrical appliances. Conversely, Jordan’s imports from Iraq encompass petroleum products, minerals, natural gas, agricultural produce, and furniture, among others.

This robust trade relationship between Jordan and Iraq exemplifies the enduring economic ties between neighboring nations, fostering mutual benefits and opportunities for further collaboration in the future.
