Al Israa University, a prominent public building, has been destroyed by Israeli forces, allegedly used as a military base for weeks.

The destruction of public and private structures is escalating, prompting fears of a “lost generation” of children, according to a senior UN official who spoke to BBC News. The conflict began when Israel declared war on Hamas after a massive attack, resulting in significant loss of life and thousands of Palestinians killed.

The United Nations’ Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that approximately 60% of homes in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed, with 90% of schools suffering significant damage. Hospitals, public buildings, and electricity networks are also affected. The situation is exemplified by individuals like 22-year-old Amir Mohammed Al-Najjari, whose family has been displaced, hindering educational and career aspirations.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General for UNRWA, warns of the risk of losing an entire generation of children in Gaza due to the extensive destruction. Images of Israeli troops cheering the destruction of educational institutions have sparked accusations of “collective punishment.” Israeli officials argue that civilian structures, including schools, were cynically used by Hamas for attacks.

Gaza’s health system is severely compromised, with only 13 out of 36 hospitals functional, exacerbating the suffering of patients, especially those with critical medical needs. Despite Israeli officials disputing accusations of deliberately causing a humanitarian crisis, concerns persist about the deteriorating situation in Gaza.

As the conflict continues, there are suggestions from some Israeli politicians to encourage civilians to leave Gaza or re-establish Jewish settlements.

The breakdown of civil order, extensive infrastructure damage, and the absence of basic public services are compounding the crisis. Israel’s prime minister asserts the military campaign will persist until “total victory,” leaving uncertainty about Gaza’s future and the fate of its displaced population.
