Iraq to include Artificial Intelligence in school curricula

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced on Tuesday the government’s commitment to incorporating essential scientific knowledge related to artificial intelligence (AI) into the national school curricula.

Al-Sudani disclosed this strategic move during a meeting with Deemah Al-Yahya, the Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), on the sidelines of his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The statement was reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The prime minister underscored that the objective of this educational initiative is to equip the Iraqi workforce with the necessary skills to effectively compete in the evolving global labor market. Al-Sudani further elaborated on the government’s intentions to leverage AI applications in critical sectors such as irrigation, agriculture, and healthcare, emphasizing the potential transformative impact on these fields.

Beyond the educational sphere, Al-Sudani highlighted the government’s broader vision to embrace digital advancements by incorporating AI into essential sectors. He specifically pointed to the digitization of the banking industry and the overarching shift towards a digital economy as key components of Iraq’s strategic plan for the future.

Responding to the proposal, Deemah Al-Yahya, Secretary-General of the DCO, expressed support for the Iraqi government’s commitment to AI integration and extended an invitation for Iraq to join the Digital Cooperation Organization. This marks a collaborative effort to foster international cooperation and knowledge sharing in the realm of digital technologies, aligning with global trends and initiatives.

As Iraq takes a significant step toward integrating AI into its educational system and key sectors, the collaboration with international organizations signals a commitment to staying abreast of technological advancements and preparing the nation for a digitally empowered future.
