Iraq commences construction of 30,000-seat stadium in Nasiriyah

In a significant development for the sporting infrastructure of Iraq, the government has announced its intent to resume the construction of the Nasiriyah Olympic Stadium.

Situated in the lower Euphrates river region, approximately 360 kilometers south of the capital city, Baghdad, the stadium project was initially granted in 2014 but faced multiple delays. Now, the Iraqi government has formally approved a contract to recommence the construction, marking a crucial step in advancing the nation’s sports facilities.

The revival of the Nasiriyah Olympic Stadium project comes after persistent postponements, and a contract has been inked with Urcu Group, a prominent Turkish corporation. The agreement outlines a financial commitment of approximately $40 million for the development of a state-of-the-art sports stadium in Nasiriyah. This ambitious project, slated to be completed within a two-year timeframe, aims to provide a seating capacity of 30,000 in Nasiriyah’s southern district.

Under the terms of the agreement, Urcu Group will not only construct the stadium but also contribute to the broader sports complex envisioned by the Iraqi authorities. The project, overseen by the Youth and Sport Ministry, encompasses additional facilities such as a 75-room hotel, training fields, and various other amenities. This strategic initiative is poised to not only enhance Iraq’s sporting infrastructure but also foster economic collaboration between Iraq and Turkey.
