Saudi Arabian Airlines, also known as Saudia, has announced its intention to deploy flying taxis to transport Hajj pilgrims between King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and various hotels in Makkah.

The national carrier aims to acquire approximately 100 Lilium jets, German-manufactured electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, to execute this innovative mode of transportation during the annual Hajj season.

Abdullah Al-Shahrani, Director of Corporate Communications and Spokesman for the Saudia Group, revealed that the airline has entered into contracts for the acquisition of the advanced Lilium aircraft. These electric planes operate solely on electric power, offering a low carbon footprint, making them an environmentally friendly choice for air travel. Al-Shahrani emphasized that the flying taxis will connect King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah to designated airstrips near the Grand Mosque in Makkah, providing swift and efficient transport for pilgrims.

The Lilium aircraft, designed to accommodate four to six passengers, boasts a maximum travel distance of 250 km. Al-Shahrani emphasized the airline’s commitment to launching an advanced service connecting various travel destinations using these electric aircraft. This initiative aligns with Saudia’s broader strategy to enhance air travel services and establish air routes between major airports within its operational network.

Highlighting the unique features of the Lilium aircraft, Al-Shahrani underscored its environmentally conscious attributes and the spacious cabin that accommodates various seating arrangements. He affirmed that this initiative is a special service catering to the discerning needs of guests participating in Hajj and Umrah seasons, providing them with a cutting-edge and eco-friendly travel experience.

Saudia’s commitment extends beyond the acquisition of the Lilium aircraft, as Al-Shahrani outlined the airline’s dedication to facilitating regulatory approvals for the operation of these eVTOL aircraft in the Saudi market. This strategic move is anticipated to significantly contribute to the Kingdom’s efforts to enhance the air transport sector, stimulate tourism, and promote emissions-free aviation in the region. The introduction of air taxis is poised to revolutionize pilgrimage travel, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative for short-distance flights on demand.
