In an official statement on Wednesday, the Iraqi Presidency strongly denounced the recent bombings in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman. The statement expressed condemnation for the terrorist acts that resulted in the loss of lives and injuries among numerous innocent civilians.

The Iraqi Presidency underlined its unwavering solidarity with the Iranian people and conveyed heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the leadership, government, and citizens of Iran in the wake of this tragic incident. Bassem Al-Awadi, spokesperson for the Iraqi government, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Iraq’s condemnation of the terrorist act and expressing full support for Iran.

The bombings occurred during a ceremony in Iran honoring the late commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by a US drone in 2020. Two explosions, claiming around 100 lives and causing multiple injuries, disrupted the event held at the cemetery where Soleimani is laid to rest.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the blasts, Iranian official media initially reported a first explosion followed by a second one 20 minutes later. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, responded with a vow to retaliate for the attacks, heightening tensions in the region.
