The United States has called on Israel to reduce its military operations against Hamas in Gaza, emphasizing the need to prioritize the safety of civilians. President Joe Biden, in a statement after discussions with Israeli leaders, underscored the importance of being more careful while pursuing the military campaign.

The U.S. has been a staunch supporter of Israel’s right to self-defense, but concerns over increasing civilian casualties have strained the historically close alliance.

During talks in Tel Aviv, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan urged Israel to consider transitioning from high-intensity operations to lower intensity in the near future. While expressing concern, the White House clarified that the U.S. was not dictating terms but was actively engaging with Israel on the duration and intensity of the conflict.

The discussions also touched on the timing of the war, with Sullivan raising questions after Israel’s defense minister suggested a prolonged conflict. The Biden administration, while maintaining its support for Israel, pressed for a focus on saving civilian lives.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant indicated that the fight with Hamas would be protracted but asserted Israel’s determination to emerge victorious. Sullivan’s visit extended to Saudi Arabia, where talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman addressed efforts to establish conditions for a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace and increased aid to Gaza.

President Biden, in a notable shift, criticized Israel for “indiscriminate bombing” on Tuesday, cautioning that such actions could jeopardize global support. Despite this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains resolute, pledging to continue the offensive until victory. Foreign Minister Eli Cohen echoed this sentiment, stating the war’s continuation irrespective of international support.

Now in its third month, the conflict began following unprecedented attacks by Hamas on October 7, prompting Israel to launch a forceful military response. The toll on both sides has been substantial, with Gaza bearing the brunt of the offensive, leaving large areas in ruins and a significant loss of life.
