Rockets strike Baghdad’s Green Zone, target US embassy
In an alarming incident early this morning, the US Embassy in Baghdad came under attack as up to ten missiles were launched toward the heavily fortified Baghdad Green Zone. Notably, a number of these projectiles were aimed directly at the US Embassy compound, prompting the activation of sirens in the vicinity.
Amid the chaos, unverified reports suggest that Iranian-backed proxies in Iraq may be behind the rocket assault on the US Embassy. Tensions have been escalating, and this latest attack raises concerns about the security situation in the region.
Last week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken engaged in a phone conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani. The discussion revolved around Iraq’s responsibility to safeguard all US personnel and facilities within its borders. Blinken stressed the urgent need for the Iraqi government to actively pursue those accountable for attacks on US soldiers within the country.
However, Prime Minister Al-Sudani, in response, reiterated Iraq’s sovereignty during the conversation. He emphasized that the recent US bombardment event in Jurf al-Nasr was a violation of Iraq’s territorial integrity. Al-Sudani staunchly rejected any encroachment on Iraq’s land and affirmed the nation’s commitment to defending its sovereignty against external attacks. The situation remains fluid as authorities investigate the perpetrators behind the rocket strikes.
