The Iraqi Ministry of Transport has officially announced the resumption of direct flights connecting Iraq with Germany and Denmark. This news comes following intensive negotiations led by the Iraqi Transport Minister, Razzaq Muhibis Al-Saadawi, who engaged in discussions with high-ranking European officials.

In a statement released through the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Minister Al-Saadawi revealed that direct flights between the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and several major European cities are set to recommence. Commencing on November 10, travelers can expect seven weekly flights linking Baghdad to Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Munich.

This move is anticipated to greatly benefit the Iraqi community residing in Europe and promises to foster deeper cooperation between Iraq and the aforementioned European nations. It also underscores the unwavering commitment of the Transport Ministry and Iraqi Airways to lift the European ban imposed on the national carrier.

Previously, in late September, Iraqi Airways had announced the resumption of direct flights between Baghdad and Moscow, signaling a positive trend in reestablishing international routes. In addition, the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) confirmed in July that adherence to international aviation standards was pivotal in the efforts to have the European Union (EU) lift the ban on Iraqi Airways. This followed a productive meeting between the ICAA President, Imad Al-Asadi, and an EU delegation at Baghdad International Airport, where discussions revolved around enhancing civil aviation practices in Iraq.

The commitment to these international standards, coupled with ongoing communication with EU officials, is expected to be instrumental in eventually lifting the European ban on Iraqi Airways.

To bolster its capabilities and expand its international network, Iraqi Airways recently inked a deal with Boeing for the acquisition of 26 aircraft, including 10 state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliners. This strategic move underscores the airline’s determination to enhance its operations and connect Iraq with an array of global destinations.

With a significant surge in air traffic in the Middle East, witnessing a remarkable 40 percent increase compared to 2022, these developments represent a crucial step in Iraq’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the global aviation landscape.
