To keep people safe you work with them, not against them. Police Commissioner Bratton has said that you don’t paint an entire community with one brush—it doesn’t make for good law enforcement. Instead, you build open relationships based on trust and two-way communication. The NYPD’s Community AffairsBureau is dedicated to this, and the lessons it has learned are now being applied to the NYPD’s Neighborhood Policing model. After all, as Community Affairs learned long ago, the key to having one city, safe and fair, everywhere for everyone, is going where we’re needed most and making strong connections with the people.
