At least 34 people died yesterday and 35 others sustained injuries in Kenya when the driver of the bus they were traveling in lost
control and it rolled rolled several times.

According to Kenya traffic police, the accident occurred near Mwingi town on the Thika-Garissa road. The injured are admitted in Mwingi District Hospital for treatment. The bus was moving from Nairobi to Mwingi

Area police boss, Kipkemboi Birir, said that the accident took place after the Mandera-bound bus lost control and rolled at a bend as it
approached Mwingi town.

He said that 11 people died at the spot while others died as they were being rushed to hospital.

‘It is unfortunate that many people have died in the accident. ‘Birir said.’ We have established that among the dead were 28 men.’

He however said that the bus was overloaded with 80 passengers instead of 64. He said that he suspects that the driver fell asleep before losing control of the bus.

Mwingi District Hospital superintendent, Dr Samson Mungane confirmed that they received 34 dead bodies and that they are also treating 35 survivors.

‘Most of those in the overcrowded bus were going to their home villages to vote.’ said Joel Oundo a traffic officer.

Kenya Red Cross officials went to the scene of accident and the hospital where the injured were admitted. They said that two of the
injured passengers were in a coma while 17 others had broken limbs.
