The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has urged for improved security measures following chaotic scenes in Khan Younis during a hostage transfer operation in Gaza.

The humanitarian organization, which has been facilitating the release of captives to Israel, emphasized the need for all parties to uphold their agreements to ensure safe and dignified exchanges.

ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric highlighted the urgency of the matter, stating: “The security of these operations must be assured, and we urge for improvements in the future.” She further stressed that “conditions underscore the importance of all parties upholding their agreements and ensuring operations take place in a safe and dignified manner.”

The ICRC clarified that it has no control over the timing, location, or surrounding environment of the transfers, reinforcing its neutral role in the process.

The disordered handover sparked strong reactions from Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who in response delayed the scheduled release of Palestinian prisoners.

He has since demanded assurances from mediators to guarantee the secure exit of captives in future exchanges.
