Türkiye to reopen embassy in Damascus after 12 years
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has announced that Türkiye’s Embassy in Damascus will reopen on Saturday, marking its first operational status since its closure in 2012.
Speaking during an interview with Türkiye’s NTV, Fidan revealed that a newly appointed interim charge d’affaires, along with a delegation, departed for the Syrian capital on Friday.
“It will be operational as of tomorrow,” Fidan confirmed.
Türkiye suspended embassy operations in Damascus in 2012 due to the deteriorating security situation during the Syrian civil war, with all staff and their families recalled to Türkiye.
The reopening signifies a shift in Ankara’s diplomatic approach toward Syria, reflecting broader efforts to reestablish ties and address mutual concerns following years of strained relations during the conflict.
