Foiled drone attack near Erbil airport raises security concerns
Security forces successfully intercepted an armed drone targeting a military base near Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq. The Counter-Terrorism Service in the Kurdistan region reported that the drone, fired by an illegal militia, was shot down at 09:52 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Fortunately, there have been no reported damages or casualties.
This marks the second drone attack within two days, with the previous attempt occurring on Sunday near the same airport. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating that it aimed at what it referred to as an ‘occupation base.’
The heightened tensions come amidst ongoing conflicts in the region, notably the war between Israel and Hamas. US and international forces deployed in Iraq and Syria remain on high alert due to numerous attacks on their bases.
Since mid-October, military bases housing US troops have experienced a series of assaults involving armed drones and rockets. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as they work to ensure the safety and security of the military presence in the area.
