A 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji W. Bolaji, has been shot and killed in a tragic incident outside a hookah lounge in the early hours of Wednesday, sending shockwaves through both the Nigerian and local Philadelphia communities.

Bolaji, who resided in Norristown, Pennsylvania, was working when he picked up a 22-year-old male passenger outside Byblos Hookah Bar near Rittenhouse Square in Center City around 2 a.m. According to police reports cited by CBS, shortly after the pickup, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee with Massachusetts license plates pulled up behind Bolaji’s SUV. Two men exited the vehicle, and one of them opened fire, striking both Bolaji and his passenger.

Despite sustaining a gunshot wound to the head, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing into a pole at 17th and Chestnut Streets. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger was shot in the arm, leg, and stomach, and is currently in critical condition at Jefferson University Hospital.

Police say the shooting was captured on surveillance cameras, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities suspect a physical altercation may have occurred between the suspects and the passenger prior to the shooting, but the exact motive remains unclear.

Ride-hailing company Uber expressed heartbreak over the loss.

> “Our hearts break for the driver’s family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. We’ve reached out to police to offer our support as they work to bring those responsible for this heinous act of violence to justice,”
Uber said in a statement.

Bolaji’s neighbours and friends have been mourning his death, describing him as a kind-hearted, hardworking man. A long-time family friend who once lived with him told NBC10 that Bolaji was always ready to help others.
He was remembered as a dedicated worker, loving partner, and a proud father whose son is a college graduate.

> “The family is devastated and seeking justice,” the friend added.

A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to support the Bolaji family with funeral and memorial costs, as well as living and counselling expenses during this difficult time.

The Philadelphia Police Department continues to investigate the shooting and urges anyone with information to come forward.
