Pope Francis has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, with his condition remaining “complex,” according to an official statement from the Vatican.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been battling a respiratory infection for over a week, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday.

A follow-up chest CT scan confirmed the onset of pneumonia in both lungs, necessitating additional drug therapy.

Despite the severity of his condition, the Vatican noted that the Pope remains “in good spirits,” spending his time reading, resting, and praying. He has also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of well-wishes and has asked the faithful to “pray for him.”

Prior to his hospitalization, Pope Francis exhibited symptoms of bronchitis, prompting him to delegate speeches at various events.

His schedule for the 2025 Catholic Holy Year has been disrupted, with all public appearances canceled through Sunday. On Monday, doctors altered his medication for the second time to combat what was initially diagnosed as a polymicrobial respiratory infection.

The Pope’s history of lung complications exacerbates concerns about his recovery. As a young man, he underwent surgery to remove part of one lung due to pleurisy, making him particularly susceptible to respiratory illnesses.

This marks another significant health challenge during his 12-year papacy, following his March 2023 hospitalization for bronchitis. His current condition continues to be closely monitored, as the Vatican provides regular updates on his progress.
