The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCaE) has confirmed that Coca-Cola products in the UAE are safe to consume and free from high levels of chlorate, following concerns raised over a major recall in Europe.

Authorities reassured consumers on Thursday that Coca-Cola products available in UAE markets comply with food safety regulations and are not affected by the European recall.

The Ministry declared that local production in Abu Dhabi-based Coca-Cola bottling plants ensures compliance with UAE safety standards.

The clarification comes after Coca-Cola’s European bottling unit announced a recall of Coke, Sprite, Fanta, and other beverages in Belgium, the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, France, and Luxembourg due to high chlorate levels detected in products distributed since November.

Chlorate, a byproduct of chlorine-based disinfectants used in water treatment and food processing, has raised concerns over long-term exposure risks.

A 2015 European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) report warned that excessive chlorate intake could pose health risks to children, particularly those with iodine deficiencies.

The UAE government reaffirmed its commitment to consumer safety, ensuring continuous monitoring and strict coordination with regulatory authorities to maintain high food safety standards across the country.
